Company Overview
CMP Pharma is a fully-integrated, specialty pharmaceutical company that addresses critical needs for niche markets and specific patient groups. Leveraging decades of experience, the company develops, manufactures, distributes and directly promotes a portfolio of high value, brand and generic oral liquid and topical pharmaceutical products. In August of 2017, the FDA approved CMP’s first NDA 505(b)(2) product, CaroSpir®, the first and only oral liquid dosage form of spironolactone. FDA subsequently approved the first and only FDA approved Potassium Phosphates Injections in 2020. CMP markets these products directly through its commercial division. CMP currently has four other 505(b)(2) applications under FDA review, in addition to other product candidates at various stages of development. CMP is actively seeking to expand its development and commercial portfolio.

Job Summary
The Director of Business Development will be responsible for identifying and executing licensing and acquisition opportunities for products to expand the company’s existing branded cardiovascular product pipeline. Additionally, the candidate will generate acquisition opportunities for approved brand and generic products in various therapeutic areas. The candidate may also be required to identify commercial partners with whom the company may co-market or license products to. The ideal candidate will have a combination of strong scientific and transaction experience, and must be highly resourceful, with the ability to work independently. The candidate will identify, evaluate and make recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors on strategic M&A opportunities for the company. This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer.

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Lead all aspects of certain business development activities (in and out-partnering), up until key stakeholder decision-making point
  • Establish relationships with third parties and experts to bring forward innovative ideas and ensure that CMP is included in relevant partnership or divestiture processes
  • Analyze IMS, Orange Book, and other data to identify products the company should proactively target for acquisitions, or areas where there are attractive opportunities to leverage CMP’s capabilities to introduce new products
  • Work with leadership team to identify areas of innovation and growth
  • For in-partnering, lead cross-functional team to screen and analyze potential collaboration opportunities from a scientific/medical, commercial, and strategic perspective, and manage detailed diligence on selected high-priority deals as part of diligence teams
  • For out-partnering, lead cross-functional team to develop internal program presentation material, accurate and with a strategic focus to maximize the value of the project, and manage information disclosures toward potential partners
  • Build business cases, including appropriate transaction financial structure for prospective partnering opportunities
  • Work with CEO in structuring, negotiation and execution of deals and transactions
  • Lead or contribute to new strategic partnering initiatives
  • Stay closely abreast of developments in areas of oral liquid medications
  • Serve as an ambassador of CMP’s brand, and promote the company as the partner of choice at
    business partnering meetings, scientific conferences

Measures of Success

  • Establish a growing pipeline of product licensing opportunities for new products that align with
    CMP’s commercial strategy
  • Identify a target acquisition list of established products or dormant applications that fit into it’s
    generic or branded portfolio
  • Develop relationships and present business cases to partner with third parties for promotion of
    specific products (if applicable)
  • Develop and present thoughtful, data-driven, and professional business cases that facilitate
    decision making
  • Successfully execute deals with favorable terms that result in expansion in CMP’s product
    portfolio or growth in its pipeline


  • 10+ years Business Development experience the healthcare industry with demonstrated track record
    of sourcing and executing acquisitions and in-licensing products or development projects
  • Understanding of complex deal structures requiring coordination with finance, legal, tax, R&D and
    commercial stakeholders
  • Proven track record at sourcing, structuring, negotiating and closing different types of partnerships
    from discovery stage assets through commercialization stage
  • Strong knowledge of the drug development and commercialization process
  • Financial modeling and commercial forecast experience
  • Established and broad network of contacts in the generic and branded generic pharmaceutical space
  • Highly analytical with the ability to be flexible and nimble when appropriate
  • Experience working with all levels of organizations and with key business stakeholders, with the
    ability to adjust approach based on company size and sophistication
  • Strong team player who listens to others’ ideas and approaches problems by finding solutions
  • Attention to detail and the ability to work individually, within a multi-functional team, and with external
    partners and vendors
  • Ability to synthesize and present data with a complex set of facts (i.e. scientific, clinical, financial, and
    market information) to executives and Board of Directors
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Travel domestically and internationally on a regular basis
  • Flexibility to accommodate meetings and video/phone calls outside of regular working hours
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to develop important, cross-functional and cross-cultural
    relationships with key stakeholders, ability to identify and raise issues to key stakeholders in order to
    develop relevant and realistic plans, programs and recommendations
  • Bachelor’s Degree is required, while an advanced degree (MBA, MD and/or PhD) is strongly
